islam-kaba-mecca-aerialTuesday the senior Vatican and Islamic scholars had their first Catholic-Muslim Forum. This forum was made to have a discussion on how they could improve the relations between the Worlds largest faiths. During this meeting they discussed what unites and separates the two religions. About 2 years ago the speech that was given by Pope Benedict, in which he said that the Islam’s were violent/irrational and angered the Muslims caused brouhaha. I believe that the way the Muslims reacted to that speech was great. Instead of taking violence or leaning onto that side a lot of Muslim scholars invited Christian Churches to discus and have better understanding and therefore have mutual respect for each other’s belief. The meeting between the scholars and Catholics centered their attention around how both religions focus on the love of God. These ways of solving problems are a lot better because that shows that people can show respect for differences.

bulgariaThe police reported that parts of a baby’s dead body were found in Shumen which is located in northeast Bulgaria, in ´´Under the Monastery´´ area.

city20electionThere are certain things that you should watch for on election day not just follow the TV, you can take a look at some points to see who will probably win the election. You have to keep your eye on the following: Exit polls, Potential meltdowns, and a blowout scenario.

-Exit Polls: You shouldn’t believe any of the exit polls that are put on the air up until late afternoon because in 2003 a “quarantine” policy was created so that there wouldn’t be troubles like the previous elections, so the information on that state’s electoral votes are kept in a secret room at least until 5 p.m.
-Election Day meltdowns: Elections in 2000 and years before have said to be a disaster, this years election should be even worse. People have already been hearing about defective voting machines and even doubtful voter list.
-A blow out Scenario: This is when the votes are casted and the state is said to be won by someone before the polls close on West coast, this might encourage a lot of the people not to go vote, even though that is said at an Eastern Time and the polls in the West coast actually close and 11pm Eastern time.

0000000545_20060919015558Maybe it’s a new trend with ABC network or just another scandal that Grey’s Anatomy will have undergone. The TV series that has lately included a strong bisexual-lesbian relationship between Hahn and Callie, have decided to dismiss Brook Smith, who played as Dr. Hahn. One of ABC insiders said that even the upcoming gay theme storylines are going to be erased. It’s another scandal for the series, that after the success that Dr. Preston Burke gave to the first and second season, he was fired from ABC for making homophobic comments about Dr. George O’Malley, who admitted that he was homosexual. Maybe it’s just another strategy of the network to make the audience think that they were going to see what happens when two respectful women fell in love in a hospital. Everyone seems to know the sexual life of the others and that happiness is very hard for them to achieve.

This past week was a busy period in the Premier League. Last Wednesday, the surprise team of the Premier League, Hull City, suffered a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea. Manchester United beat West Ham 2-0. Arsenal drew four all with Tottenham in the North London derby. That was a thrilling encounter in which Spurs scored two goals in the last two minutes to grab a point. This past weekend, Chelsea won convincingly at home as they beat Sunderland 5-0. Manchester United beat Hull City 4-3 at home. Hull City showed a lot of fight against the champions and they did not go down easily. Arsenal were upset by newly promoted Stoke City and in a top versus bottom clash, Tottenham defeated Liverpool to once again show how close the premier league really is. Since Harry Redknapp’s take over at Tottenham, he has produced 7 points in 3 games. That is a great tally considering Tottenham is bottom of the table and two of those games were against Arsenal and Liverpool. Tottenham now has 9 points from 11 games. This Saturday, the big game is Arsenal vs. Manchester United at Emirates Stadium. Liverpool will be playing West Brom and Hull City will be playing Bolton. On Sunday, Tottenham will play Manchester City and Chelsea will play Blackburn. As things stand right now, Chelsea and Liverpool are tied at the top of the table with 26 points each. Manchester United sits in third with 21 points, but as always, they still have a game in hand. Arsenal is tied for 4th with 20 points. Other teams with 20 points are Aston Villa and Hull City. At the bottom of the table is Tottenham with 9 points. Just above them are Bolton and West Brom which are both tied with 11 points.

It seems as though everyone who attends IMG has the same goal. Almost everyone wants to become a professional in their sport. That’s great, but are these very same people making the most of what they have been given? Everyone says they want to be a pro, but are they taking the steps to reach that goal? From what I have observed, many people take short cuts during IPI because they don’t want to put in the work or just feel lazy. This will not cut it. At the professional level, an athlete is competing against other athletes who have the same skill and drive. It is an extremely competitive arena in which one mistake could cost dearly. Small things, such as attitude, will make the difference between two people with equal talent and drive. Also, many other small things such as nutrition, proper rest, and how one takes care of themselves are also very important. Being a professional may seem glamorous, but is it the glamor or the grit that IMG students are really seeking?

Yesterday, a plane crashed in Mexico City, killing Mexico’s interior secretary, Mourino, and at least 7 other people. The cause of the plane crash is unknown, but it appeared to be accidental. The plane crashed in a wealthy neighborhood and set fire to over 20 cars. 1,800 people had to be evacuated from nearby office buildings.  All eight people on board died in the crash their remains were later recovered. At least 40 people on the ground were injured, 7 of these people were seriously injured. Former assistant attorney general Jose Luis Santiago was also on board the plane. Santiago had previously been the target of several assassination attempts. This could have been the reason for the plane crash, but it is unlikely as it did appear accidental. The Mexican president, Felipe Calderon, was close to Mourino and stated “his death causes me enormous pain” in a news conference. This is obviously a great loss for Mexican citizens and their government.

A huge trade in the NBA was made by the Denver Nuggets and the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons traded Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess, and a back up center in order to acquire Allen Iverson. The Pistons are looking for some explosiveness on the offensive side of the ball and believe that A.I. can give them this presence. There is lots of talk going on about whether or not this was a good trade for the Detroit Pistons, due to the fact that they had to give up so much to acquire one player. It seems that the Denver Nuggets are getting the most out of this trade, with two proven players in Billups and McDyess. Both players have played in the NBA finals, and have proved that they can step it up on the big stage. Only time will tell which trade team will benefit more, but I’m excited to see what the future has in store for these two teams.

Recent research has linked autism to rainfall. Scientists believe that the furthest northwest states in the U.S. are more prone to having people get autism than anywhere else. They believe that the large amount of rainfall that accumulates in the region directly effects the number of autism cases. Scientists theorize that this may be due to the amount of time children of the northwest spend indoors watching TV, which can adversely effect the brain. Spending too much time indoors also raising the likelyhood of inhaling large amount of dangerous chemicals. Chemicals and pollutants can be brought from the upper atmosphere down to earth by acid rain, snow, or other contaminated precipitation, increasing the chances of autism. Lastly, it is believed that children can receive different forms of autism from conditions inside a women’s womb during pregnancy.

While the sunshine and constant “good” weather of Bradenton is nice, I miss the changing seasons in Idaho. Bradenton has great weather, but there is little variation. Average daily temperatures range from 61.6 degrees in January to 82.1 degrees in August, leading to a truly endless summer. In contrast, my home town of Pocatello experiences four radically diverse seasons. Average Pocatello daily temperatures range from 23.3 degrees in January, to 70.6 degrees in July. As a result, summers are warm, fall means all the leaves fall off the trees, winter ushers in the real cold and lots of snow, and spring means everything greens up and comes back to life. Don’t get me wrong: I’m not complaining about waking up in paradise every day, but there is definitely something good to be said about warm summer nights, crisp fall mornings, snowball fights, and the beauty of spring, which you appreciate so much more after enduring a harsh Idaho winter.

Deangelo Hall was recently cut from the Oakland Raiders football team by owner Al Davis. This release of the Raiders star cornerback is supposed to help rattle the team. The team owner is trying to make something happen, as his team has got off to yet another terrible start at 2-6. Al Davis believes that by releasing one of the veterans on the team, that it will give an effect that no one on the team is safe from being released. By releasing Hall, the team gets out of a seven year- 72 million dollar contract. This will free up some salary cap space, so that the Raiders can possibly make a few trades to give this team the boost it needs. It has been reported the team owner and coaches held a meeting to discuss the dismissal of up to 12 players on the team.

With only two weeks until the start of the 08-09 season of the Basketball Academy, the team is more then anxious to get out and play. Practice has made a noticeable turn as well, transitioning from preseason drilling to more team oriented play. Plays are being incorporated into the workouts, as well as weekly scrimmages against the postgraduate team. The first game coming up on November, 18, is the first of a two day team showcase in Tampa. Immediately after, it’s up to Jacksonville for a three day tournament where they are expecting a great turnout. With such a busy schedule, especially over Thanksgiving, you would expect a sorrowful, lackadaisical attitude; here at IMG Academies, this is not the case. Nothing but excitement and enthusiasm fills the basketball arena.

This NFL Season has been interesting so far. In the first week of the season, last year’s MVP, Tom Brady, got injured and is out for the rest of the year. Meanwhile, the teams that were really good last year, have not started well this year- the Colts, Packers and the Patriots. Then, on the other hand, the Giants are having a very good year and it is looking like they may win the Super Bowl this year. Some sleepers so far this year have been the Titans and the Redskins. These two teams have really come out strong and they are looking to be strong contenders for the title this year. My pick for the Super Bowl match up is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers versus the Tennessee Titans with the Bucs winning in their home stadium. The Bucs just look good because Jeff Garcia get the job done and they have a good defense.

I disagree with the Motion Picture Academy’s effective refusal to bestow any major award on a comedy movie or an actor starring in a comedy. Year after year, the Best Picture and Best Actor awards go to dramas, science fiction films, musicals, and every other sort of picture except for comedies. Say what you will, but no one has ever given a better performance than Chris Farley in “Tommy Boy.” He carried off the role of a recent college graduate with convincing sincerity, expressing real pride in the grade he received on the last exam of his senior and seventh year at Marquette, explaining: “They give a lot fewer D pluses than D minuses.” And if you study Farley’s performance carefully, you realize that he brought something to the screen that Lawrence Olivia and Anthony Hopkins could never carry off – comedic timing and physical comedy stunts (e.g., “Fat Guy in a Little Coat”) combined with solid acting fundamentals.  Farley, other comedic actors, and their films should not be precluded from Academy Award consideration simply because they make us laugh while entertaining us.

Chanel

Chanel

This year on Father’s Day a young girl named Chanel Petro-Nixon left her house in Brooklyn, New York to walk to Applebee’s which was just a couple of blocks away to meet some friends.  The friends said that she never showed up and after a few days of her being lost, her body was found outside a house in a busy part of Brooklyn.  Chanel was found strangled and tied into a garbage bag.  The murderer killed her and put her by the garbage can for her to be picked up with the normal trash of that day.  Investigators believe that someone had to have seen this but no witnesses have stepped forward yet.  The parents of Chanel say that she always answers her phone when they call and when she did not answer they began to worry and called her friends.  Her friends did not know where she was and then the parents called the police.  Police and investigators are offering a $34,000 reward for any lead on the killing of Chanel.

The presidential election between McCain and Obama this week has just made history. People witnessed the very first African American becoming President of the United States of America. However, before the day of the elections the newspaper Grey New York decided encourage citizens of the United States to pay attention to what the candidate offer, and not to their skin color. It is very important to put aside all the stereotypes while voting, because the person that will get elected will be in charge of the country for four years. In order to encourage people to get rid of stereotypes the newspaper decided to post a picture of Obama with white skin and McCain with black skin. People could look at this poster not only in the newspaper, but also on the streets in New York. Additionally, some schools decided to include this poster in the school program in order to encourage students to get rid of race prejudice.

Throughout the world people are celebrating the victory of Barack Obama against John McCain in America’s presidential election. Great Britain’s prime minister expressed his joy at Obama’s win stating that both he and Obama “share many values” about politics. China’s President, Hu Jintao, also said how happy he was at the Democrat’s success and said how he is excited about strengthening the relationship between the two countries. Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, said this morning of Obama’s victory that it has raised “enormous hope”. Other people to congratulate the Illinois Senator included the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon how said this morning how he was excited about “an era of renewed partnership and a new multilateralism.” Pope Benedict XVI, another important international figure head, has asked for “God’s blessings on the American people.” It appears that Obama’s message of change has touched the hearts of people all around the world and has given people hope of a better future.obama_wideweb__470x2770

Lance Armstrong, who recently announced his return to professional cycling, has yet to decide if he will race in the 2009 Tour de France. Lance Armstrong who has return to pro cycling in efforts to raise cancer awareness, stated that “tension with French cycling fans, with French media and certainly tension with the organizers” have delayed his decision. Last month Tour de France organizer Jean-Etienne Amaury called Armstrong an “embarrassment” to the race. Armstrong also stated that he fears being targeted by rival racers. In addition, Armstrong says that the only way tensions between him and the tour would disappear was if he gave up his “American citizenship and became a French citizen”. Armstrong has also says that his last few tours “weren’t good”. Lance Armstrong is currently racing in the U.S. and is schedule to race in Europe and Australia in the upcoming months. Is this a tune up for the Tour de France? We’ll soon find out.

fidel_castro1Many Obama supporters are oblivious on who their voting for and why. They think they’re going to get free everything. If Fidel Castro was running for president and promised free gas and mortgage, he would also win president because no one wants to pay for anything. There was a YouTube video of a lady saying she is voting for Barrack Obama because she won’t have to pay for her gas and mortgage. That’s how many voters are basing who their voting for because they were too lazy to go get a good education to help them strive for a well payed job or even if they didn’t get a good education, there are plenty of jobs out there. I believe if Barrack Obama wins president there will be a huge disappointment in what the people expected out of him.

If you have not already heard, within the next couple of weeks, Reggie’s Deli will be coming out with a new menu. As part of the IMG student government I got to sample some of their new food a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutely delicious. The new head chef came from Carrabas and he is unbelievable. He has great ideas and he is a super cook. Reggie’s is going to have daily specials every day so that there is always something new for the students of IMG to chose from and they are going to begin making fruit smoothies which I am sure we will all love. I hope that everyone gives the new menu at Reggie’s a chance because they have really worked hard on bringing in new foods for us to try, improve the quality of their food and really just enhance the whole experience when ordering from Reggie’s by bringing us choices, lots and lots of choices.

For those of us who are complaining about the tough admissions process in the U.S., we do have it a lot easier than many students around the world. The CAT examinations in India provide a new world of opportunities for many students every year, but do not think for a second that these are ordinary tests. This year, the number of hopeful prospects has increased once again, the majority of those dreams however, are doomed to die hard. Of the 276,000 students taking the test this year, only 2000 will be admitted in in seven Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The number of students taking the test has increased by 15 % since last year and now only 1 in 138 people will be accepted by the institutes. For the record, the approximate acceptance rate for Harvard College is 10%. This test is one of the hardest in the world but a marvellous life awaits those who overcome the odds and grab their chance.

Obama

My prediction for the election on Tuesday is Obama winning. Each region will vary for each candidate. I think McCain will win the majority of the South. Obama will win the majority  of the North East and Mid Atlantic. McCain has a chance to win the majority of the West coast States. The Midwest will be won by Obama. The states that are too close to call are North Carolina, Ohio, and Florida. I think Obama will win big against McCain for the popular and the electoral will go to McCain. With Obama winning he will be the first African American president ever. Right now my predictions are looking very accurate and Obama is looking very good as the future President of the United States.

We all have seen plenty of maps regarding the 2008 U.S. Presidential election over the last few weeks. They always seem to have a certain pattern between them, an uncanny resemblance that holds in almost all of the cases. The only exceptions to these mundane pictorial representations occur when either there is one outstanding personality, or if there is enough hatred against one of the two parties. Otherwise, the Democrats normally sweep the north east and the west coast. The Republicans set their stake in the south and throughout the mid-west. This statistic is very interesting as the people of these states seem to have identical mindsets throughout their life times. These people seem to know which party they will vote for not because it is their individual choice, but because of what they hear in their neighbourhood. Several states in the mid west such as Oklahoma and Kansas seem to have decided that they will never vote for a Democrat whereas states such as California and New York are always against Conservatives. The states have very different ideologies and it often looks like there are two or three different countries inside U.S.A.

Obama seems to be winning right now with a total of 220 electoral votes and it looks like he will take the presidency with ease.  California still has not closed their polls yet and California is known to be a predominately democratic state in which the Democrats will gain another 55 electoral votes.  This will put Barrack Obama up over the 270 votes needed to win the election.  If McCain wins every state from here on out he would only have 263 votes still not enough to win the election, so McCain needs a miracle and needs to take California in order to even have a chance.  But it has been at least 15 years since the last Republican took California.  Well now that all the campaigns are over and Barrack Obama is going to be our next president well see how much “change” he really can deliver.  We will see if he is really the right man for the job and see if he sticks to his word and pulls our troops out of the Middle East, fixes our economy, and has tax cuts for the middle class.  Only time will tell.

The 2008 presidential campaign finally ends tonight. It’s been a long run for the candidates. They have been not-stop campaigning in every state for the past year. Since the east coast is in head of the rest of the United States in time, the east coast states polls will close earlier than the western states. The presidential poll tracker shows that Obama is leading by 2-5% in North Carolina and Florida, which are the two biggest states left in this election that will make it or break it for McCain. If Obama walks away with Florida or North Carolina, it’s pretty much over for McCain. Whether it’s McCain and Palin or Obama and Biden who win office, either one will make history by Palin possibly being the first women vice president or Obama being the first African-Arabic president. polls2

Voting in Hollywood is as important as everywhere else, and celebrities are taking the presidential election very seriously. A lot of them support the candidate of their choice openly, so the public knows about it way before the elections starts. The very first star that supported him last year was Oprah Winfrey, probably the most famous woman in the world. Another superstar that supported Obama was Madonna. During her concert in Meadowlands on Sunday, Madonna said: “Sarah Palin can’t come to my party. Sarah Palin can’t come to my show. It’s nothing personal”. Susan Sarandon is another Obama’s supporter; she said that her new home would probably be Canada or Italy if McCain wins the election. Other actors, producers and celebrities that supported Obama are: Steven Spielberg, Robert de Niro, George Kluni, Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston and others. So who do you think will become the next President of the United States of America?

Oprah Obama 2008

Voting is very important duty of every citizen of the United States. Hollywood celebrities are as much citizens as anyone else; however, while people don’s like to say who they have chosen, celebrities display their support for one of the candidates publicly. Arnold Schwarzenegger, for example, showed his support for McCain in Ohio. He said that he is planning to invite Obama to attend his next Arnold’s Classic bodybuilding in Ohio, “because he needs to do something about those skinny legs” and “beef up those scrawny little arms”, but mostly says Schwarzenegger, Obama needs to put some meat on his ideas. Jon Voight, father of Angelina Jolie, was another supporter of McCain. In his interview with Washington Times he said that Obama “falls short in every way” and his presidency will “demoralize this country and help create a socialist America”. Other celebrities that supported McCain are actor and producer Clint Eastwood, actor Silvester Stalone, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and others. So who do you think will become the next President of the United States of America?
