The Summer Olympic Games of 2016 will be held in a city that works at the rhythm of samba, where people are known for their joy, closeness and generosity, and where the sandy beaches are the meeting point of the crowd. It was in the world-famous Copacabana beach where thousands of people had gathered to hear the announcement. An eruption of jubilation occurred when the name Rio was called out. Several factors have made the 106 members of the Olympic Committee opt for their project.  “The candidature of Rio was built upon a vision of the Games being a celebration of the athletes and sport, as well as providing the opportunity for the city, region and country to deliver their broader long-term aspirations for the future.” Jaques Rogge, President of the IOC, said.  More than half of the Olympic venues are already built, since they hosted the Panamerican Games in 2007. The Maracana stadium, home of the soccer club “Flamengo” will be in charge of hosting the opening and closing ceremonies. This election is great news for Rio, for the fast socio-economic development of the country, along with these Games will help accelerate their transformation into an even greater global city. The Games will be held from August 5-21 and its theme will be “Live Your Passion”.

After many months of hard work, preparations, conferences and meetings with the International Olympic Committee, a final decision was taken this Friday in the Bella Center of Copenhagen. Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) will host the 2016 Summer Olympics. It is the first time that this event is going to be held in a South American capital, and the announcement brought tears to Brazilian President Lula, who tried unsuccessfully to hide his excitement during the press conference that followed the final vote and announcement. “Our hour has arrived”, he said. “It has arrived”. Rio beat Madrid in the final round, by 66 votes to 32. Tokio had been eliminated in the previous round and Chicago was the first one to be ruled out, to the surprise of the people in the Bella Center of Copenhagen, since it was the favorite to be selected as Host City. At the end, the non-written rule of rotation of continents stood and the Games will be held in Rio.

rach11In December of 2008, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department opened a crate outside of a warehouse and found an 840-pound Brazilian emerald inside. The police department had been searching for this emerald for months and was shocked when they found it. Now, the police must find out who owns this jewel, at least 5 people have claimed the emerald was there so far. Since the find the story has been a very popular topic. As this find grows in popularity, more people have been claiming it is theirs. Until the real owner is found, the police have decided to keep the emerald locked up. Last September, a man named Larry Beigler called the police and claimed his giant emerald was stolen from his Los Angeles warehouse. He estimated the worth of the emerald to be $400 million. The emerald was in possession of two businessmen from Idaho. The businessmen were in the process of selling the emerald to a buyer.

There was a plane crash in Brazil this weekend that killed twenty-four people.  There were twenty-eight people on the plane which crashed into the Manacapuru River.  There were four people who survived the crash and were safely rescued by a local fire station crew, one of the women had an incredible survival story.  After the plane had crashed and had submerged the lady saw a square beam of light at the edge of the plane.  She told herself that she owed the survival of her body to God because she was still alive after the plane had crashed.  Many of the people on the plane were pressuring the others to open the emergency exit and jump out, but this woman was not upset or worried at all because she knew that God would take care of her.  For her to not be freaking out in that situation is amazing because I know that I would not be as calm as she was.
