During an interview between President Obama and a journalist, a fly started annoying Obama and flying around his head.  Because it took his attention, the interview paused for a moment.  Obama focused in on the fly and set his target.  He raised his hand, like a scorpion ready to sting, and with an electrifying quick smack he hit the fly first attempt.  The fly experienced a long fall to the floor as he had to admit defeat.  The interview still didn’t proceed as Obama got a tissue and removed the carcass left on the floor, alongside his expensive shoes.  When he returned, the interview casually continued.  Now that’s killer reflexes by the President!

rachel2Sara Watson, a student at the University of Central Lancashire in England made a car turn “invisible” with an unbelievable paint job. It took her three weeks to transform a battered Skoda into an optical illusion. The illusion is of a car parking lot outside of her studio. Everything from the windshield to the tires is painted according to the theme. The car now will be used by a local recycling firm for advertising. This is Watson’s second year as a student at the art school. She received the car from owner Steve Jackson who was very impressed with this car’s new paint job. Jackson described the illusion as “just amazing”.  When Jackson first saw the photos he was “convinced it was something which had been done on the computer”. The effort and attention to detail Watson put into the car is unbelievable. Watson chose to use a car because she was “experimenting with the whole concept of illusion but needed something a bit more physical to make a real impact”.

rachel1The “Door to Hell” sits next to the small town of Darvaz, Turkmenistan. It is an amazing sight that was discovered thirty-five years ago. Geologists were drilling for gas when they discovered something very different. They found a very large cavern underground that was filled with poisonous gas. In order to burn off the gas, the geologists ignited it expecting it to go out in a few hours. Though, the gas is still burning to this day. The hole is 60 meters wide and 20 meters deep filled with rocks that are on fire. People who come to see this crater stand right by the edge or look down from their car. Scientists say the hole was not caused by volcanic activity or a meteorite impact. The crater was made sometime in the 50’s when Soviets were prospecting for natural gas in the area. The hole is an amazing sight because it is in the middle of nowhere, and all you see is a large fire pit.

whitecapsIts a wonderful thing going to the ball park with fresh clean air, the smell of hot dogs, peanuts and cracker jacks. One minor league ballpark has all that plus a humongous burger.  It is called the “Fifth Third Burger” and it is a heart attack plus two waiting to happen. It is served by a team in the Detroit Tiger organization called the West Michigan Whitecaps. It is a 1.67 pound grilled ground beef patty served with nacho cheese, chili, salsa, Fritos, tomatoes, and lettuce all served in an 8 inch sesame seed bun. According to the director of sales and media relations, no one has ever finished a full one. If they do they will received a t-shirt with a picture of the Burger and all the credit for doing so. This burger can feed a family of four, and even they won’t finish this burger most of the time. If you’er ever at a Whitecap game make sure you try out the Fifth Third Burger.

Valentine’s Day or Saint Valentine Day is a tradition that started around the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries. It’s a holiday on February 14th that all people throughout the world participate in. Lovers express their love to each other by giving gifts, for example valentine cards, flowers, stuffed animals, and jewelry. Valentine’s Day is named after Christian martyrs named Valentine. Martyrs are people who sacrifice their life for the belief of a special cause that they have witnessed and are normally looked down upon. Hearts, doves, Cupid, and love notes are all traditional symbols of Valentine’s Day that started in the 19th century. Soon after this, people started businesses in making Valentine cards. North Korea celebrates Valentine’s Day on March 14th but call it White Day. In consideration of not everyone having a Valentine, North Korea also celebrates Black Day on April 14th, which is the total opposite of Valentine’s Day and White Day. Those who are single celebrate by eating Jajangmyeon, noodles with black bean sauce, together.

untitled6This past Saturday a baby in California was reportedly born with 12 fingers and 12 toes. This is a very rare condition. At birth, no one noticed the unusual number of fingers or toes. Just a while later, the child’s dad noticed the oddity. The father of the child said that some of their family members had six fingers, which had not fully developed, but he said they had never seen 6 toes. The condition of having six fingers is somewhat common. It is known as being polydactyl. Doctors said that having the condition in both the feet and the hands is what makes it so incredibly rare. Having 6 fingers can be an advantage. Imagine becoming a guitar player or a piano player. Having 6 fingers would be a tremendous advantage. There are a several famous polydactyl people. Florida Marlins’ Antonio Alfonseca and late blues guitarist Hound Dog Taylor are among these famous people. It is important that as this child grows up, he sees the advantage of having 6 fingers and 6 toes rather than the strangeness of it.

untitled5Music is a huge part of the average American’s life. Think about it. We listen to music all the time. Whether we are driving in our car, sitting at home, working on homework, lifting weights or even sitting in class we are often listening to music. Unfortunately, deaf people are unable to hear music and thus enjoy its beauty. Recently, Sean Forbes started a non – profit organization called the Deaf Performing Artist Network. It is better known as D-PAN. Forbes began this organization in an attempt to use sign language to communicate today’s popular songs to the deaf. In his first video, he performed an Eminem song and it was an instant success. Since then, his organization has really taken off. His videos are more popular then ever among the deaf and he continues to release many of the big hit songs to the deaf world. I think it’s great that someone has taken the time to try and convey to the deaf the feelings music is capable of creating.
