Heather Watson, 2008 finalist

Eddie Herr International is a Junior tournament held in IMG Academies the week after Thanksgiving every year since 1987. It was founded by Eddie Herr’s grandson to honor his grandfather for his life’s passion for tennis and bringing the best junior players in the world to compete. The tournament now attracts many of the top international junior players, and makes IMG Academies during this week the house of kids from as many as 92 nationalities.
This year’s event is not different. The main street from Pendleton’s main building to the clay courts is full of people 12 hours a day, who are either getting ready for their matches or enjoying the priviledge of watching the most talented kids together in the same site.
Kids and teenagers, because the age of the competitors ranges from 10 to 18 years old; from 4 feet to 7 feet tall, but they all share one same goal: become professional tennis players, and this tournament is just one small step towards that.

Good advice can also be bad advice.

Good advice can also be bad advice.

What has it come down to when you can do something selfless and do good for someone else and get in trouble for it. How would you feel if you were being investigated for cheating when all you did was drop out of a match because of an injury? That is what happened to the 19-year-old Caroline Wozniacki during her match against Anna Kremer. Caroline was leading the match 7-5 and 5-0 , but was suffering from a hamstring injury so her father gave her the advice to drop out of the match knowing she would not be healthy enough for the second round. Not thinking of herself, she dropped out and forfeited the match to Anna letting her go through to the next round. Unfortunately, her father’s comment was heard through a microphone all over the internet giving the people the chance to bet on the match before it was called. Now Caroline is being investigated for “purposely” giving up the match. It is just not fair because all she did was protect her body. What is the world coming to nowadays?

Pendleton student Heather Watson, born in Guernsey, UK, is this year’s Junior US Open Champion. 11th seeded, and after struggling in her 1st round match, her chances of winning the tournament looked like a long shot. However, her game got better and better throughout the week, and she cruised through the draw with a superiority that was also shown in the final. She controlled the match against Russian Buchina from the beginning, winning the first set 6-4, and finishing with an impressive 6-1.  Heather has been training at IMG and attending Pendleton for the last 5 years, and is known around campus for her intelligence on the court, her hard work, and her kindness and everyday smile. Heather can proudly say that she is the first English girl to win this event. It is also her first Grand Slam of, hopefully, many more to come. She is now heading for another ITF in Canada, with a totally new point of view, looking down at her rivals from the 3rd position in the junior world ranking that she has achieved after this recent success. Congratulations, Heather!

I have patella tendonitis in my right knee. I’ve been injured for four weeks now. When I first injured my knee I thought they were growing pains, so I left it alone hoping that the problem would resolve itself. The next week I consulted the trainers and with the significant increase in pain I felt, they evaluated it and said I had tendonitis. I was out for two weeks. I spent two and half-hours in the trainer doing rehab exercises everyday, certainly wasn’t much fun. I felt no consistent improvement so I attempted to play my fourth week just to see what would happen. I managed to play for the most part during practice. I struggled to play points or finish a match because I couldn’t move well on the court. This Monday we had matches. These matches determine our groups in which we are in for the rest of the year. I was determined to push through the pain and play. I was surprised how I managed to still win a few points. However, I went for a short ball, which was low. The moment I stepped down on my right knee it gave way and I went down. My knee swelled and you couldn’t imagine the pain. No damage was done it was just my tendonitis but now I’m out of practice for two more weeks. Where I can only play tennis if I stand still and have a coach feed. I’m going to be in rehab for the next 6-12 weeks. I am now at a point where I am struggling to stay positive and see the bright side of things. Being injured sucks!

wimbledon-2008-day-4-rafael-nadal-gulbis-2_981965Rafael Nadal arrives to the U.S Open in New York, feeling better prepared than what he thought he would. He says that he is very exited to be playing the U.S Open this year just because he was not expecting to, due to his multiple injuries. The 23 year old is going to be playing his first match on Monday, wearing a new Nike outfit that represents all the cabs in Manhattan. Rafael Nadal also comes into this tournament with no type of pressure and just hoping for the best results with the most positive attitude. Before the U.S open begins, Rafael is playing tennis with young kids that go to 3 different public schools in New York and that are big fans of his. Serena Williams and Roger Federer are also attending to this event and are happy to make kids happy with their presence. They are both also very happy to be playing the U.S open this year with no injuries and good health. We wish them all the best of luck!

n674625494_6502871_5850861One of the seniors to graduate as a part of the 2009 class is Lauren Golino. Lauren is a tennis player here at IMG Academies. She has been a student at the academy for four years, however she only attended Pendleton for her senior year. Lauren was born in Caserta, Italy, later moved to Houston, Texas and then to Bradenton where she began attending the academy shortly after. Lauren is unsure about her college plans as of this point. She will be taking a year off in which she may take a few classes in Bradenton. She will then go to University at a school that is still yet to be decided. Lauren is a very hard worker in both tennis and school and is known for this by her peers. She is very gifted and has attained a class rank of 2 amongst her fellow graduates. Lauren does not plan on playing tennis so that she can focus more on her academic and career goals of becoming a plastic surgeon. Lauren is a very good person and a very hard worker. I am sure she will be able to do anything she sets her mind to in life.

bfflOne of the seniors here at Pendleton who will be a part of the graduating class in a few weeks is Megan Fabry. Megan has been a student at IMG and Pendleton since her sophomore year and she has been a close friend of mine ever since. Megan is from Saudi Arabia even though this is very hard to believe for the majority of people she tells this to. She lives there because her father works for an oil company. Her family is American which is why people find it hard to believe that she is from Saudi. Megan plays tennis at IMG. She will be taking a year off in which she will be taking a few classes in Bradenton and will then go off to college. Megan is a very loved person around campus and every friend of hers knows why. She is a very nice person who always makes the people around her laugh and smile. Megan does not intend to play tennis in college but rather focus on school more. She still works very hard at tennis nonetheless which is a quality that will serve her well for the rest of her life.

4703_197873025421_751870421_6923335_4445823_nJanshaaz Khan, more commonly known as Shaaz, hails from India. He came to IMG at the start of his junior year. He is a tennis player and will be a part of this years graduating class on June 5th. Shaaz plays tennis here at IMG and his head coach is Jorge. Shaaz is a very hard worker on the court and is known for this. He is also very gifted in the classroom. He will be attending the Stern School of Business at New York University this fall.

In his spare time, Shaaz is very ardent soccer fan. He enjoys playing and watching the sport. His favorite team is the red devils, Manchester United. I have a lot of admiration and respect for Shaaz because he will always be a true fan at heart just like myself. Even in the worst of defeats, he still wears the crest proudly on his heart and bleeds red.

Abby Wright is a senior at the Pendleton school and is graduating this June 2009. She has played tennis for pretty much her entire life; she has played since she was 3 years old. Abby was born in Clearwater, Florida. She has moved a couple of times and lived two years in New York and two years in Kentucky. After that she moved down to Bradenton and started attending middle school at Pendleton and has stayed here for six years. She said that “IMG and the tennis program have helped me both in the mental part of the game but also in the technical side”.  After she graduates she is going to spend her summer having fun and training hard, because she is going to be one of the top players if not the best player at Florida Atlantic University were she got a 100% scholarship.FAU_logo

steph“Life is too short to be anything but happy, so love deeply, forgive quickly, take chances, give everything with no regrets, & always remember that everything happens for a reason”. This is one of Stephanie Ritchey’s favorite quotes. Stephie is originally from Costa Rica. She has attended the Pendleton School for two years while also playing tennis for IMG. She is going to West Chester University next year and plans on majoring in communications. Stephie loves tennis and has the fortunate opportunity of playing on the college team. I consider Stephie an extremely close friend and know that tennis is not her only love in life, she also enjoys going to the beach, shopping and of course sleeping. Stephie is a very sweet and kindhearted person who you can easily spill all of your feelings too. I have no doubt that she will go on to do great things in the world. Love you lots Steph!

dirkDirk Ramidal is from Trinidad; he has attended the Pendleton School for four years. Dirk plays tennis here at IMG and plans to walk on at Stetson University next year. Dirk enjoys playing and watching all sports, especially golf and soccer. He is a huge of Manchester United. I have personally known Dirk for three years and know that he is always full of entertaining surprises. He is always the one to make a person laugh and has high aspirations for himself. Dirk is not one to slack off when given the opportunity; he strives to be the best that he can be in everything. Dirk is a member of National Honor Society that entails community service and being a leader in general. He has contributed many hours towards community service this year helping out with Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Dirk plans to major in finance and economics with the hopes of becoming an investment banker. I wish Dirk all the luck in the world and know that whatever he sets his mind to he can achieve. Good luck Dirk!

2008/2009 school year is almost over, and I have to say that this year went very well for most of the people in IMG and Pendleton. This year tennis program improved a lot, and all the tennis players felt more dedication and enthusiasm coming from the coaches, which was the main force to push us to do our best. For such hard work that we all put into tennis, the coaches organized a special trip for us – a trip to an Adventures Island, the world famous water park! The date is set for May 21st, and I think it is the perfect timing, because the end of the year is the time that all of us should have fun and enjoy the company of our friends, especially seniors, since it is the last year for most of us. It looks like most of the seniors from Pendleton and other schools are going to attend that amazing trip, and have a tennis reunion and an unforgettable time with all the friends.Adventure_Landing_Shipwreck_Island

girl20fightMy tennis coach has created a new ranking system for our group.  After assessing all of our matches he numbered us one through nine.  He then explained to us that we could “challenge” the higher ranked players and take their spots.  Another twist to this was that if we didn’t show up to practice that we would continue to go down.  For the fourteen-year-olds who in our group with major aggressive attitudes and dreams of being number one in the world, this system is taken very seriously. Cheating, fighting, questioning calls, and long awkward silences between friends have become part of our daily routine.  Our sweet little coach in his attempt to motivate us has made a small error in judgement.  What he failed to over look is that we are catty, snotty, teenage girls who just want to rip each others heads off and present a major overconfidence just to scare one another.  This new system has taken tennis from a competitive sport where you work on your game and battle the ball – to a cutthroat emotional battle of “who can stand the other person’s cheating, attitude, and outbursts”.

— Jules Tragsleglise

tournamentdeskSomething very common to tennis players at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy is the Grand Prix. The Bollettieri Grand Prix is a tournament that is set up for students at the academy to play on weekends occasionally. Its main purpose is to give the players a chance to have more match play opportunities. The players also become more experienced in playing tournaments because they are exposed to these situations quite often. The Grand Prix at the academy usually takes place about seven times during the school year. Points from these tournaments are very important because they all go towards inter academy rankings. At the end of the year, there is a tournament called the masters for the top eight players from each age group, vying to be crowned the best player in the academy for their division. The tournaments usually begin on fridays with the finals taking place on Monday. This weekend, however, they decided to try something new and have the tournament begin on Saturday morning in order to have an extra day of training.
