A New Kind Of Cat

Posted on: October 29, 2008

Recently, in New Orleans, Louisiana, scientists produced the first ever, American glow-in-the-dark cat.  His name is Mr. Green Genes and he is a 6 month old Orange Tabby breed.  Mr. Green Genes was made so that researchers could learn whether or not there was a gene that could be introduced harmlessly into the feline genetic make-up to create a transgenic cat.  If the creation of a transgenic cat is possible, Mr. Green Genes could be the first step in finding a cure for deadly diseases through a process that is known as gene therapy. The fluorescent gene, which was added to Mr. Green Gene’s DNA when he was conceived earlier this year has no harmful effect on his physical or mental health.  The gene needed to glow in order for scientists to see where the gene was supposed to go in cat and eventually in the human.  Mr. Green Genes will remain at his home in the New Orleans Aububon Center for Research of Endangered Species, where he will be the subject of other tests harmless to his health.

  • Rob Dresser: Many people have a poor grasp of what this is about. At its core this is about advanced stage terminal illness and relieving those in that condition
