No Triple Crown For Super Saver
Posted May 16, 2010on:
For the 32nd straight year, there will not be a Triple Crown winner. Super Saver was defeated by Lookin at Lucky in the Preakness Stakes. Super Saver, whom jockey Calvin Borel had predicted to win the Triple Crown, finished eighth in the 12-horse race. Trainer Todd Pletcher attributed the poor performance to the short rest between the Derby and the Preakness. There are only two weeks between the two races. Super Saver was the 9-5 favorite while Lookin at Lucky was the 2-1 second choice. Lookin at Lucky will not race in the Belmont because trainer Bob Baffert said that he is not fit to run the 1 1/2 mile track at Belmont Park. Super Saver will not race either. This is the second year in a row, and the fourth time in the last 5 years, that the winners of all three jewels of the Triple Crown will be different horses. The last time a horse came to Belmont with a chance at the Triple Crown was Big Brown in 2008. Affirmed was the last Triple Crown winner in 1978.
