Toys Banned from Happy Meals and Other Fast Food Restaurants

Happy Meal

Santa Clara County has become the first place in the ban toys to be distributed as awards or promotion from fast food children’s meals. The new law was adopted to help stop obesity because studies show that a lot of children are attracted to fast-food not because of its food but because of the toys that come along with the children’s meals. This law seeks to “prevent restaurants from preying on children’s love of toys to peddle high-calorie, high-fat, high-sodium kids’ meals,” said Ken Yeager, spokesperson for Santa Clara County. Now, children in Santa Clara County will not have another reason to beg their parents to take the family out to McDonald or other fast-food restaurants only because of the latest toy. Also, children will not be lead into linking the relationship between prizes and unhealthy foods. This is a very healthy move since the obesity rate in the U.S. has skyrocketed in the last 30 years, obesity in children is common and about a third of Americas are overweight. Hopefully, this move will encourage the whole country to do the same.
