Presidents Day Weekend Invitationals

Posted on: February 11, 2010

Live Scoring Leaderboard from last years HP Boys.

Taking place this Presidents Day Weekend (2/13-2/15) are two of the highest profile junior golf tournaments in the country. On the men’s side is the long running AJGA HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas that is located just outside Houston. On the women’s side is the 2nd annual AJGA Annika Invitational hosted by the all time women’s golfing great Annika Sorenstam that is located in Reunion, Florida.  Both are AJGA Invitationals that assemble the best junior golfers in the world. For the HP Boys Championship, the top 60 boys in the Polo Golf Rankings are invited and another 18 exemptions are given to top foreign players to round out the 78-man field. The same concept applies to the Annika.

The tournaments should be very exciting this year as 16 of the top 20 boys in the national rankings are in the field including IMG/Pendleton’s Cheng-Tsung Pan (Ranked No.2) who narrowly missed a playoff by 1 shot last year and on the women’s side Victoria Tanco (2 time Rolex Player of the Year) who is looking to improve upon her 6TH Place finish from the previous year.

The boys will be playing the difficult Fazio Championship Course at Carlton Woods. It will challenge the players with its extreme length of 7,358 yards and tricky layout that meanders around water hazards, forests, and natural habitats. The weather forecast is set to be extremely frigid at mid 30s to mid 40s throughout the week with 25 mph winds and projected rain.

The girls are playing at the Ginn Reunion Resort’s Watson Course. The course is very challenging with its countless undulations and contours in the fairways that have immense sand bunkers strategically placed to absorb any errant shots.

It should be very interesting to see how the week unfolds. Various IMG/Pendleton students are represented among the ranks of those attending and it accurately portrays the depth, talent, and the hard work the players put in. On the boys side represented are Cheng-Tsung Pan, Emiliano Grillo, Seiji Liu, Zhong Yang Fu, Sean Kelly, and Cyril Suk. On the girls side represented are Victoria Tanco, Laetitia Beck, Ginger Howard, Ashlan Ramsey, Taylor Ramsey, Tanaporn Kongkiatkrai, Jordan Lippetz and Doris Chen.
