On Monday, the Boston Red Sox picked up Victor Martinez’s $7.1 million team option. However, they declined catcher Jason Varitek’s $5 million team option and shortstop Alex Gonzalez’s $6 million team option. Varitek has a player-option of $3 million and has 5 days to decide if he is going to accept it. Varitek, who is 37 years-old, hit only .209 last season and played significantly less in the second-half due to the acquistion of Victor Martinez, another catcher. The Red Sox also re-did the contract of knuckle-ball pitcher Tim Wakefield, agreeing to a two-year agreement worth about $5 million in total. Wakefield is just 17 wins shy of the team-record of 192 shared by Cy Young and Roger Clemens.
