Another Tragic Story

Students at the Funeral

It was just another day for Melody Ross in beautiful Long Beach, California. Ross was sixteen years old, an honor role student and a track star in the eyes of many. On Halloween night, her high school, Woodrow Wilson, completed its homecoming game against archrival Polytechnic High School. Halloween is a time to dress up, have fun with friends and gather up as much candy as you can. Woodrow Wilson High School hosted a homecoming dance for all the students to cap off their Halloween night. Ross was enjoying herself as she and nearly two hundred students lit up the dance floor, enjoying the best days of their lives on a typical Saturday night. As sad as it is to report, Halloween 2009 ended up being Ross’s last Halloween. At around 10p.m. a bullet came out of nowhere and ended her life in an instant. Ross was not the intended target but she was the one that ended up suffering. A kind, young, innocent girl who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, had her life taken from her. Families and friends all gathered at the memorial for Ross to pay their dues with flowers, hand written notes and many tears that ran down people’s faces. The killer has not been found. Life is fragile and for Ross, she will never get to experience the rest of hers, which many felt was very promising. Each day is a new day and no one ever really has a sense of what is going to occur. Appreciate what you have in the moment, learn from the past and prepare for the future because sometimes you just never know when it is all going to end.
