La Russa and McGwire Return to Cardinals

Tony La Russa has signed a one-year contract to remain the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. Mark McGwire will replace Hal McRae as the team’s hitting coach. La Russa’s contract is for one year and a mutual option for 2011. La Russa managed McGwire for the Oakland A’s and the Cardinals. La Russa has managed the Cardinals to 8 postseason appearances and a World Series Title in 2006. He is also 3rd on the career wins list. La Russa had been deciding his future since the Cardinals were eliminated by the Dodgers in the NLDS. McGwire retired as a player after the 2001 season and has been involved with steroid allegations ever since. He fell short in the balloting for the Hall of Fame despite hitting 583 career home runs.
