Strasburg Solid in First Start

Stephen Strasburg had a solid debut in the Arizona Fall League last Friday night. Strasburg, who signed for a record $15.1 million, went 3 1/3 innings. He threw 5o pitches, 32 for strikes, and struck out 2. Both of his strikeouts came on changeups. When asked about this after the game, Strasburg attributed this to the quality of hitters and said he was not surprised to only strike out two batters. Strasburg didn’t even allow a runner to reach second base. He was able to get out of trouble several times by inducing ground-ball double plays. Strasburg said that while at San Diego State, he worked on throwing his sinker to keep the ball on the ground. Strasburg’s fastball topped out at 98 mph and he was consistently hitting 95-97 mph. A lot of scouts were in attendance and one scout even said Strasburg should be the Nationals’ opening day starter and not spend any time in the minor leagues. Strasburg is scheduled to pitch again this Thursday in Arizona.
