Two victims of the only atomic bombings in history, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, are joining together to try and bring the Olympics to Japan in 2020.  The two bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki estimated around 220,000 deaths combined.  The press were told last Sunday by Hiroshima’s mayor (Tadatoshi Akiba) and Nagasaki’s mayor (Tomihisa Taue) that they will establish a joint committee to work on a proposal based on world peace.  Akiba stated in his speech last month in Mexico City, that he believed that by 2020 he could abolish nuclear weapons, and suggested to hold the Olympics in Hiroshima and Nagasaki to celebrate the occasion.  Both Akiba and Taue are founding members of the Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign.  The Campaign’s main goal is to have a global ban on nuclear arms.  For the 2020 Olympics, there are other cities competing for the host position such as Istanbul, Budapest, and Delhi.  By 2013 the host city should be named.
