Rio de Janeiro to host 2016 Olympics

Posted on: October 2, 2009

After many months of hard work, preparations, conferences and meetings with the International Olympic Committee, a final decision was taken this Friday in the Bella Center of Copenhagen. Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) will host the 2016 Summer Olympics. It is the first time that this event is going to be held in a South American capital, and the announcement brought tears to Brazilian President Lula, who tried unsuccessfully to hide his excitement during the press conference that followed the final vote and announcement. “Our hour has arrived”, he said. “It has arrived”. Rio beat Madrid in the final round, by 66 votes to 32. Tokio had been eliminated in the previous round and Chicago was the first one to be ruled out, to the surprise of the people in the Bella Center of Copenhagen, since it was the favorite to be selected as Host City. At the end, the non-written rule of rotation of continents stood and the Games will be held in Rio.
