Giant Baby

Posted on: September 25, 2009

Early this week in Jakarta, Indonesia, a mother delivered a massive 19.2 pound baby by way of C-section.  The baby broke the record for the heaviest baby ever recorded in Indonesia, and came up a few pounds short of the all time record for heaviest baby, which is 23 pounds. The 23 pound baby that was recorded in 1879 died only a few hours after it was conceived.  The 19.2 pound giant is not just a fat baby, it also is abnormally tall.  The average height of a newborn baby is around 16 inches, while this giant of a baby was 24 inches tall at birth.  Doctors can only come up with a few reasons why the baby was born so big, one being the “mother’s diabetes likely caused the child to receive too much glucose in the womb, accounting for his massive size upon delivery — but so far, so good, in terms of the newborn’s health.” Still, the wide-mouthed male proved to be a handful and then some during his first few hours in the world. “He’s got a strong appetite, it’s almost nonstop feeding,” Dr. Sitanggang told the news agency.  The only thing we can hope for is that this huge baby does not face the same problems as previous giant babies and is able to live a long healthy life.2029519.bin
