Three years ago, on August 23, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the southeast United States. Hurricane Katrina was the most expensive hurricane in history, costing the United States an estimated 81 billion dollars. The cyclone was also one of the top five deadliest tropical storms in history with 1,836 fatalities and 705 still missing. The most fatalities and property damages occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana due to the failure of the levee system. Almost every levee protecting the city was demolished within hours of the storm moving inland and soon nearly eighty percent of New Orleans was flooded. Thousands of people lost their homes during Hurricane Katrina due to the flood, many of whom have still not returned to New Orleans. To this day, people from Louisiana are still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Although New Orleans has been cleared from most of the flooding, the city is not back to the way it once was, some people still have not returned to their homes, and those who lost their lives are still missed and remembered by everyone. It will take many more years of progress and reconstruction to get New Orleans back on its feet.
